I watched Golmaal Returns and Mumbai Meri Jaan.
GR is a movie that should be written about. It's doing well at the BO and the makers are celebrating their success with a planning of "Golmaal 3"! It's hard to watch the film till the end. Stars, locales fail to score in an ugly film. Disaster! Arshad Warsi, Ajay Devgan looked desperate to see their names in a hit!
MMJ on the other hand, is a fine movie by another young director. Paresh Rawal, Irrfan rank among the finest actors we have, no one doubts that. I have not seen Paresh Rawal in such form before. I admire him a lot. But to me it was his finest (I've not seen Sardar). After the phenomenal Hera Pheri he was miserably, but understandably miscast in a series of mediocre films. His performance deserves awards at any level. He showed why he quotes so much even as a character artiste. Irrfan is terrific as always. He had very little to speak, but delivered with unbelievable flair. KK Menon, Soha Ali Khan, Madhavan did very well, too. The gentleman who played the role of a young police constable, was impressive (I saw him in a TV commercial doing some apparently funny stuff!). 5 threads, all centred around Mumbai 7/11 serial blasts, floated without disturbing each other. Each one was treated with equal importance. Paresh, Irrfan and KK had the better ones. The remaining 2 were good, but a tad overdone. Hopelessness, despair, loss, fear, hatred were the emotions touched upon built on the backdrop of blasts. The director didn't dig into the terrorism aspect, but helplessness took the centre-stage. Towards the end, we saw Mumbai limping back on track (with the ever-green rendering of Md. Rafi at the background). In fact the film is unusually reluctant. The director didn't even bother to join all the threads together! As written in many reviews, it's truly like a documentary, low on entertainment values if entertainment solely involves switching off your brain!
