WB went through a huge paribartan in last year's election. It's not even a year - things are not looking so hunky dory right now. The media hyped the new reign as the solution to all our woes. Over last 10months, they have slowly changed their view on the new government. A large section of the media has turned very skeptical about the CM and her acts. The intellectuals are turning vocal against her for being autocratic etc. A few of them have started fearing that we would touch abyss of degeneration. They are trying to defend their erstwhile pro-change stance as a need of the hour given the under-performance of the earlier government. They are criticizing the new government for not living up to their expectations, for not keeping its own promise. Well, I've grown up watching the new CM's climb from a nobody to a CM. Given her track record over past 25-30yrs, there is hardly any scope to feel surprised by her performance on the hot-seat. She has been extremely consistent with her way of doing things. She never stopped entertaining me from the very beginning and she still does. I don't blame her... anymore.
What never stops amazing me is the role of the media. A section of it has visibly defined polarity and they are very easy to identify. They are silly and safe! The real 'performers' are the ones who supposedly had dreamt of miracle a year back and soon started selling stories of disillusionment to the viewers. I am certain that these brains are not at all shocked with the performance of this government. They are what sells well or they are what they sell. This section of media keeps the mass glued to a political saga and hit the jackpot in their business goals. They tend to dictate what is good and bad to the rest of the society. Sometimes they turn vindictive due to personal differences. Sometimes they read viewers' minds and feed the exact dose of events. Their advertised oath to impartiality and fairness camouflages their real motives. Unbiased reporting may be too much to ask for. Still I expect the media to be more restrained and less manipulative.
Is it bad? Who knows! There is no violation of law. Ethics is too amorphous an object to worry about. Moreover media is all about democracy - for/of/by the people. Then there must be nothing wrong in this business. In a way, it's pure business management... this is what people with highest intellect prefer studying and taking up as profession. My uneasiness might be linked to the blindness that prevails in us. I hope we learn that electoral machineries fall short to change anything until and unless we change ourselves!
