P.K., the latest offering from Raj Kumar Hirani, is a statement against those who fight on the distinction between commercial and art-house movies. Raju has consistently made films he wanted to make with utmost care on box office collections, while keeping his basics intact. His basics usually meant simplicity, innocence, heart, message and a dash of soul until he made PK. His faith in his own Alpine school philosophy of "Light is right" remains intact, but this time around he chooses to climb a K2 instead of a Mullayangiri. The 3 Idiots team reunite to do something more than just a light-hearted comedy. This may be the boldest Hindi movie I've ever seen. It surely doesn't offer the best of stories or editing or music or satire. It's not the most entertaining one either - lower in fun quotient than Raju's earlier works too. There is quirky humor, heart-melting characters, adorable moments, emotional highs and lows... in patches. What trumps everything else is the poignancy of the questions asked and the courage with which the alien tries to isolate truth from the sea of falsehood. We prefer overlooking the most common things around us to honor the sacrosanctness of the institution of gods and religions. The unpretentiousness and the clarity of the director overtakes even the decidedly bold film-makers by miles. We, the adults, are voluntarily blind; we hush up our children in the name of obedience - hence an alien does the job for us. Every question is innocent and should have been asked everyday. Every confusion is real and shouldn't be shied away from. PK is a triumph of fearlessness. You don't need to be a subject matter expert to make a film like this. PK raises my hope that many more such attempts from different quarters will be spawned henceforth. I must thank Aamir Khan, the producers and all its cast and crew to perform so well and stand by Mr Hirani. I have been trying not to take any direct reference from the movie... but I must mention a few phrases: "business of fear", "managers of God", "duplicate God", "fashion"... go watch it for more.
